WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Elaine Sanderson, 78, of West Hartford, Conn., entered into eternal peace on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Sherman Mills, but resided in West Hartford for almost 50 years. Elaine was predeceased by her mother, Viola Bragg of Sherman Station. Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Earl H. Sanderson Jr.; daughter, Cheryl E. Sanderson of Columbia; and son, Timothy E. Sanderson and his wife, Maryanne Parente Sanderson; and granddaughter, Elena L. Sanderson of South Windsor. Affectionately called “Bammie” by Elena, Elaine cherished every moment that she spent with her granddaughter. Elaine also leaves behind many cousins and friends from Maine. She will be remembered and loved by her family forever. Elaine worked for the Phoenix Insurance Co. of Hartford, as well as for the YMCA in West Hartford, where she retired after 18 years. She was an active member of Center Church in Hartford, where she enjoyed spending time with her “church family.” Elaine taught Sunday school with Earl for 17 years, and was the first woman moderator of Center Church. She also served on the Board of Christian Education, on the Nominating Committee, and on the Pastoral Relations Committee. Elaine’s life interests included her family, visiting with many dear friends, traveling, gardening and cleaning. In addition, many will agree that her apple, lemon meringue and coconut cream pies can never be replicated. Callings hours will be held 4-7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main St., West Hartford, Conn. A private graveside service will take place at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford, Conn. A public memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the First Church of Christ, Center Church in Hartford, Conn., followed by a reception at the church house. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Center Church Camp, Asto Wamah 42W Route 87, Columbia, CT 06237.
