PORTLAND – Norma Ellen Peters Sands passed away Friday, March 31, 2006, with her family by her side. She was born April 5, 1935, in Eastport, to James B. Peters Sr. and Frances Trott Peters. Norma was raised in Eastport, graduating from Shead Memorial High School in 1953. After graduation she worked in the office of Holmes Packing Corporation in Eastport. In 1956, she moved to Portland and worked for Maine Bonding and Casualty, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Digital Corporation and L.L. Bean. Norma loved her home and spending time with her family and friends. She was an avid gardener. Her flowers and lawn were a source of pride to her and the good-natured envy of her neighbors. She happily shared her knowledge of gardening with others. She also enjoyed taking walks daily in her neighborhood and walking on the beach in Portland. Survivors include her brother, James Peters and sister-in-law, Brenda Peters of Eddington; sister, Carolyn Peters Baxter and brother-in-law, Stuart Baxter of Dennysville; an aunt, Barbara Trott Robinson of Milford, Mass.; nieces, Nancy, Sally, Cathy and their families; nephews, Ray Jr., Larry, Christopher, Tony, Stephen and their families. She was predeceased by her parents and sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Ray Cook. Norma was a real Downeaster, droll and self sufficient and a joy to be around. She will be sadly missed by neighbors and friends from near and far. A memorial service will held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the Dennysville Congregational Church, Route 86, Dennysville, with the Rev. Ronald Windhorst and the Rev. Colin Windhorst officiating. Friends and family are invited to gather at her sisters home, Carolyn Baxter, 91 Milwaukee Rd., Dennysville after the service. A private burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Eastport. It is the family’s request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to PAWS Calais Humane Society, Calais, ME 04619. Arrangements are under the guidance of Independent Death Care, 471 Deering Ave., Portland, ME 04103.
