PRESQUE ISLE – Norman Kenneth Varnum O.D., 76, died Sunday, March 16, 2008, at his home. He was born Sept. 16, 1931, in Calais, the son of Albert E. and Margaret S. Varnum. Norman grew up in Calais and Machias and spent much of his time on the family farm in Alexander. He graduated from Calais High School, where he was a star baseball and basketball player. He then served four years in the U.S. Navy as an aerial photographer. After his naval service, Norman was an undergraduate in pre-optometry at the University of Maine at Orono and then went on to receive his Bachelor of Science and O.D., Cum Laude, from the New England School of Optometry, where he received the Theodore F. Kline Award and was the class president his third year. He was married to Minnie K. Varnum, his wife of 34 years, in 1959, and began his optometric practice in Presque Isle in 1960. Norman was very involved in his profession and community. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and served as president of Aroostook Optometric Society, as president of the Maine Optometric Association and on the professional development committee of the American Optometric Association, where he co-authored a manual on practice management. First appointed to the Maine Board of Optometry by Gov. James Longley in 1977, Norman was re-appointed for a second five-year term in 1982. He was involved in the development and implementation of laws governing eye care, in the licensing of new practitioners and in the setting and enforcing of professional standards and ethics. Norman was in active practice as an optometrist in Presque Isle for nearly 40 years and served in many leadership positions in the community. He was president of Presque Isle Kiwanis Club, Community Concert Association and Central Aroostook Toastmasters Club. He was a director of the Presque Isle Chapter of the SPEBSQSA and a member of the corporate board of New England College of Optometry and The Aroostook Medical Center. Norman had a great love of the outdoors and spent a lot of time fishing, hunting, downhill skiing, canoeing and camping with his family and friends. He also shared that love of the outdoors with many young people as a scoutmaster for Troop 168 of the Boy Scouts of America. He was an Eagle Scout and saw both of his sons become Eagle Scouts. He is survived by his three children, Brett and his wife, Catherine, of Presque Isle, Mark and his wife, Jacqueline, of Oakland and Susan Ko and her husband, John, of Pound Ridge, N.Y.; and his seven grandchildren, Jessica, Megh-ann, Jonathan, Daniel, Amanda, Lauren and Elizabeth.
