BANGOR – Norwood F. Joy, 79, died Oct. 9, 2003, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Oct. 2, 1924, in Westbrook, the son of G. Frederick and Eleanor G. (Welch) Joy. Norwood was brought up in the Westbrook area and graduated from Westbrook High School. He then attended the University of Maine and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. Norwood served in the U.S. Navy for four years on a submarine in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a manager in the Bangor region for Reliance Electric, retiring in 1983. Norwood started his own business contracting electrical lighting, where he left his mark on several baseball fields and facilities throughout the Bangor area. He was a 52-year member of the Saccarappa Masonic Lodge No. 86 in Westbrook and a member of the Anah Temple Shrine. Norwood enjoyed his summers at the family cottage in Owls Head. He and Edith spent many winters in Maui, Hawaii, where they made many close friends. Norwood was predeceased by his wife, Edith (Durrell) Joy in 1992; two brothers, George Joy in 2001, Howard Joy in 1997; and a nephew, Robert Joy, in 2000. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Ruth Joy, wife of the late George Joy, of Westbrook; and nephews, David W. Joy of Westbrook, Michael A. Joy of Ocala, Fla., Stephen G. Joy of Sarasota, Fla.; a niece, Kathleen Howarth of Westbrook; a sister-in-law, Betty M. Joy, wife of the late Howard Joy, of Jacksonville Fla.; and nephews, Timothy Joy of Jacksonville Fla., Fred Joy of San Antonio, Texas; and niece, Nancy Curran of Westbrook; special cousins, Margaret Whittier and Donna Nason, of Winterport. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where relatives and friends are invited to a Masonic Memorial Service at 8 p.m. conducted by the officers and members of Star in the East Lodge No. 60 of Old Town. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Brookings-Smith with the Rev. Kevin Holsapple, rector, and the Venerable Tom Benson, archdeacon, of St. John’s Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment will be beside his wife at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
