MARS HILL – Olga (Boyd) Beattie, 84, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006, at the health center in Mars Hill. She was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Mars Hill, the daughter of John E. and Katie (Drost) Boyd. As a high school student, Olga worked at a private school in Poughkseepsie, N.Y. After graduating from ACI, Class of 1941, she continued working her way through nursing school graduating as a registered nurse in 1945 from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Brooklyn, N.Y. She worked 42 years in the field of nursing until retiring in 1987. Olga’s extraordinary work ethic and passion for her career were the basis for her appointment as the assistant director of nurses and acting director of the 900 bed Meadow Brook Hospital, Nassau County Medical Center, charged with the full responsibility of all personnel on her shift, including doctors, nurses, ambulance workers and other staff. She ended her career after a number of years at the West Haven Veterans’ Medical Center in Milford, Conn. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Hugh; brother, Arnold; and sister, Eva Bierce. She is survived by her son, John Boyd McDonald; daughter, Jean Towne of West Babylon, N.Y.; son, James McDonald of Milford, Conn.; sisters, Lillian Burke of Centerville, New Brunswick, Ilean Burtchell and husband, Donald, of Westfield; brothers, Ronald Boyd and wife, Gertrude, Norris and wife, Linda, Wallace and wife, Ella, all of Mars Hill; special niece, Katie Buck and husband, Wes; grandchildren, Rebecca Lydtin, Hugh William Lydtin, Kenneth Towne; great-grandchildren, Evan Michael Hicks, John Patrick Hicks III; special friends, Penney Olson and Brenda Ashby; and a number of nieces, nephews and grandchildren. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at King’s Grove Cemetery, Mars Hill with the Rev. Lawrence Beals officiating, assisted by the Rev. Robert Root.
