ORRIN L. WORCESTER

COLUMBIA – Orrin L. Worcester, 91, a lifelong resident of Columbia, died Jan. 31, 2004, at a Jonesport healthcare facility. He was born Sept. 15, 1912, in Columbia, the son of Ralph E and Ronie Leighton Worcester. Mr. Worcester graduated from Columbia Falls High School, Class of 1932. He was a farmer, an avid hunter and fisherman. He has been a blueberry farmer since 1937. He served as fire warden for the town of Columbia from 1948 until 1982, road commissioner for 33 years between 1948-1981, was constable from 1954-1974 and a school board member in the 1960s. He was also a director of Pleasant River Canning Co. for 17 years, and the last surviving charter member of the Pleasant River Fish and Game Club. Other civic organizations Mr. Worcester belonged to were the Good Neighbor Club, Order of the Redman, and Knights of Pythias. He was honored to receive the Boston Post Cane in September of 2002, as the eldest citizen in Columbia. He is survived by four sons, Philip and his wife, Valerie, of Columbia Falls, Thomas and his wife, Cheryl, of Columbia, Bruce of Prospect, and John and his wife, Helena, of Jupiter, Fla.; three daughters, Ronie Strout and her husband, Carroll, of Addison, Charlene Ramsdell and her husband, Barry, of Columbia, and Phyllis Mewer and her husband, William, of Eliot. He is also survived by one brother and his wife, Oswald Worcester and Julia; and three sisters-in-law, Priscilla Worcester, Olive Boyd, and Inez Grant, all of Columbia; 17 grandchildren; including a special granddaughter, Michelle St. Pierre; 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Glenis Grant Worcester, in 1992; and a granddaughter, Karen Worcester; his brothers, Merrill Worcester, Ralph Worcester Jr.; and his sisters, Hilda W. Hooper, Stella W. Buckman and Elva W. Cotton. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at the new Columbia Town Hall with the Rev. Bernard Brown officiating.
