OAKFIELD – Owen L. Prince Jr., 86, husband of Nellie (Roach) Prince, died at home Monday, Jan. 10, 2005. He was born April 23, 1918, in Augusta, the eldest son of Owen L. and Frances (Dutton) Prince Sr. Upon graduation from Oakfield High School, Class of 1936, he began working for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945. He received the Purple Heart after being wounded on Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day. After an honorable discharge, he returned to work on the railroad for nearly 20 years. The remainder of his career was spent working as a Rural Mail Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He served as Secretary of the Frank B. Holden Post No. 52 for 57 years. He attended the Oakfield Baptist Church. Owen was an avid golfer who played at Va Jo Wa golf course in Island Falls as well as the County Seniors League and Maine State Seniors. During his retirement years it was not unusual for him to play more than 300, 18 hole rounds a year. On his 81st birthday, he played 80 holes. He always bragged about having never scored a hole in one. He was also a long time bowler at the Birch Point bowling lanes where he was the league scorekeeper for a number of years. In addition to his wife of 31 years, Nellie, he is survived by two daughters, Mary and her husband, Richard Elliott, and Nancy and her husband, Robert Kovach; one brother, Ralph; two sisters, Cleo Sewall and Sherry Shaw and their spouses; three grandchildren, Tori, Matthew, and Melissa; one great-granddaughter, Jordyn; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-laws; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Mildred (Smith) Prince; a son, Lauren Rocky; a grandson, Tony; two brothers, William and Frank; two sisters, Yvonne and Blanche (Buddie). Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at Bowers Funeral Home, Sherman Street, Island Falls, with the Rev. Kirby Rushton, officiating. Spring interment will be in the Oakfield Cemetery.
