AUGUSTA – Patricia H. Merfeld, 72, of Gray Birch Drive, and formerly of Castine, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, after a brief illness. She was born Feb. 15, 1934, at Walter Reed Army Hospital, in Washington, D.C., a daughter of the late Col. Louis D. Hutson and Frances (Fleminster) Hutson. Mrs. Merfeld attended high school at Girl’s Preparatory School, Chattanooga, Tenn., and college at, both the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Antioch College in Ohio. She was a self-employed horticulturist, running the Cactus House for many years, as well as a painter and poet. Her family, as well as her plants, gardens, art and spirituality were her passion. Mrs. Merfeld was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Augusta. She was predeceased by her parents; and a sister, Betty Faucette. Mrs. Merfeld is survived by two sons, Peter Merfeld and his wife, Melissa, of Augusta and Mark Merfeld of New York City; a sister, Sally Parker and her husband, Bill, of Hendersonville, N.C.; three grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Catholic Charities of Maine, P.O.
