FALLS CHURCH, Va. – Retired U.S. Navy Captain Paul Treagy died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at his home in Falls Church, Va. Treagy was born Oct. 3, 1930, in West Pembroke, Washington County. The son of Beatrice Morang and Paul A. Treagy, he grew up in an extended family Down East on the rocky coast of Maine. His formal education began in a one-room schoolhouse. He was graduated from Pembroke High School. When he joined the Navy upon graduation, he was young enough that his mother had to sign the papers. He spent two years in the fleet before receiving a congressional appoint-ment to the United States Naval Academy, entering by way of the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, R.I. In 1954, he graduated from the Naval Academy. Paul Treagy then spent 25 years as a surface line officer. He served as antisubmarine warfare officer on the USS Ware (DD865) and as communications officer for Destroyer Squadron 5 (COMDESRON5). He was first lieutenant on the USS Albany (CA123) and executive officer of the USS Nicholas (DD449). His sea assignments included five commands. He served as commanding officer of the USS Redwing (MSC200), the USS Bluebird (MSC121) and the USS McCloy (DE1037). He both commanded and commissioned the USS Fanning (DE1076) in 1972. He also served as commodore (commanding officer) of Destroyer Group 5. His shore billets included duty as an assignment officer at the Bureau of Personnel (BUPERS), White House aide during the Kennedy administration, administrative assistant to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO); assistant chief of staff (ACOS) for Plans Commander Naval Forces Vietnam, executive assistant to J3, Joint Chiefs of Staff, deputy commandant of midshipmen in 1976, when women were first admitted, and head of the Surface Antisubmarine Warfare Branch, office of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO). He was a graduate of the Naval War College, the National War College and the Naval Post-Graduate School, where he earned his master’s degree. His awards include: the Naval Commendation Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Metal, European Occupation Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit with Combat V. He was a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers and was a life member of the Naval Academy Alumni Assoc. He retired in 1979, when his wife experienced a massive brain hemorrhage, taking over responsibility for his two children who were in first and third grades. He had been employed as a senior engineer at four corporations that provided engineering support to the Navy. He was an active member of Sleepy Hollow United Methodist Church for many years. Paul is listed in Who’s Who in the South and Southeast in 1986 and 1987. He is survived by his wife, Julia Ann Drenning of Falls Church, Va.; two children, Michael Treagy of Richmond, Va., and Carrie Treagy of Falls Church, Va., both graduates of the University of Virginia; his brother, Wayne Treagy of Hampden; his sister, Rae Treagy of Pembroke; and his sister, Jacqueline Allen of Big Bear, Calif. His sister, Diane Treagy, predeceased him. In March 1997, he was diagnosed with his first brain tumor (glioblastoma multiforme grade IV malignancy). With surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, he conquered this condition to continue to participate in and enjoy life. In March 2003, his second GBM (grade IV) made itself evident. He fought this one just as gallantly as he did the first. Paul donated his book collection to the new library in Pembroke.
