BANGOR – Paul I. Pray, 69, went to be with the Lord May 18, 2007, at his residence after a courageous battle with mesothelioma cancer. He was born Feb. 2, 1938, in Bradford, the son of Percy and Lucy (Rice) Pray. Paul is remembered by those who knew him well, as a fine man of strong character, quiet strength, good humor and generous spirit. He graduated from Higgins Classical Institute in 1956, worked at Bath Iron Works for two years, then attended Aroostook State Teachers College for two years. Paul worked for Merrill Bank as a manager for 10 years, which led him to take the risk of self-employment with his childhood friend, Ron Ryan. They started Lucky’s Auto Sales, Pushaw Road, Glenburn. Paul later branched out opening Pray’s Auto Sales, on outer Broadway, and several mobile home parks. He enjoyed his fellowship with his church family at the Advent Christian Church, where he was a member and served as a deacon and on the finance committee. A special thanks to the Florida Crew for making winters so enjoyable. One of Paul’s largest accomplishments was obtaining his pilot’s license. He loved to fly to Rainbow Lake and “drop a line.” Paul was a hard worker, but always had time for family and friends. He loved to compete and will be remembered for the many Rook games, golf, tennis matches, endless games of Hearts, and always impressed the young people with his unusual talent of riding a bike backwards. Paul enjoyed playing practical jokes on his family and friends, and there are some wonderful memories, like the times at camp scaring the kids while tubing behind the boat. He was a wonderful and dearly loved husband, dad, bampa, brother and dear friend to many. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Marlene (Boody) Pray; children, Stephen Pray and wife, Tina, of Glenburn, Scott Pray and wife, Dana, of Bozeman, Mont., Paula Simon and husband, Chuck, of Bradford; three precious grand-children he was so proud of, Casey Pray, Jessica Pray and Brandon Bautista; sisters, Elsie (Pray) Catell and husband, Stan, of Rockland, Marjorie (Pray) Niles and husband, Richard, of Bradford and Marilyn (Pray) Bommer and husband, Arno, of Peabody, Mass; twin sisters, Lois (Pray) Knapp and husband, Joe, of Berwick and Lorraine (Pray) Higgins and husband, Bob, of Charleston; brother, Adrian Pray and wife, Valerie, of Bradford; a very special friend, who was like a son, Bill Vicnaire; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Rose (Pray) Whiteside; and a brother, June Pray. Friends are invited to call 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, at the Advent Christian Church, 2141 Broadway, Bangor, with the Rev. Clayton Blackstone officiating. Interment will be immediately after the service at Williams Cemetery, Bradford. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Advent Christian Church parish hall after the interment. Those who wish to remember Paul in a special way may make gifts to the Paul Pray Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 8360, Bangor, ME 04401, to help support the youth programs in his home town of Bradford.
