ELLSWORTH – Pauline (Armstrong) Squilanti passed away peacefully July 3, 2008, in the presence of her beloved family. She was born Oct. 18, 1918, in Machias, the daughter of Carl and Bessie (Brooks) Armstrong. After her graduation from high school, she worked as a licensed practical nurse at Hanson Private Hospital, Machias. She was also employed at Down East Community Hospital, Machias and did private duty nursing. In later years, Pauline was the office nurse for Dr. Joe Lacasce of Ellsworth. She had the ability to connect with people, and her compassion for her patients was seasoned with a quick sense of humor and an intuitive understanding of their needs. Her personality can hardly be contained in a column of newsprint, for Pauline lived large, with a keen interest in politics and current events, and she made her opinions know in strong terms. Her enthusiasms were lavished on her family life, her home and her wide circle of friends. Pauline delighted in holidays, especially Christmas, and the gifts she chose for children invested that season with memories that have remained magical long into their adulthood. With her characteristic eagerness to embrace new ventures, she and her husband traveled widely throughout the U.S. in connection with his work. She learned to cross-country ski and to ride a motorcycle in her 60s. Pauline is survived by her husband of 42 years, Guswin Squilanti; their son, Alan and wife, Sandra and their children, Erika and Ryan, of Bucksport; their daughter, Kathryn Peasley and husband, Kenneth and their sons, Nathan and Brian, of Buxton; her niece, Pauline Cates; brother-in-law, Richard Squilanti and wife, Joy and family; sister-in-law, Wilma Stark, all of New Jersey; and cousins, Emma Ann Kirby, Kay Riggs, Jo Ann Dearborn and Mary Jane Irish. She was predeceased by two brothers, l. Brooks and Keith Armstrong. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by Acadia Burial & Cremation Direct, 248 State St., Ellsworth.
