VENICE, Fla., BIDDEFORD and WATERBORO – Pauline C. (Beety) (Berry) Lawrence died Dec. 4, 2006. Born Feb. 10, 1921, she was a resident of Biddeford until retiring. She graduated from Biddeford High School and Northeastern Business College and later attended St. Francis College. Pauline was employed by the state of Maine employment office as a claims interviewer. She became deputy city clerk of Biddeford and then city clerk of Biddeford. In 1972 she ran for and won the position of clerk of courts at the York County Superior Court, Alfred. She retired from this position in 1980. She was a dedimus justice, justice of the peace, notary public and a bail commissioner. She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Congregational, and served as clerk of that church, as deaconess and taught in the Sunday school. In Florida, she attended the Venice Methodist Church. She was a past president of the Biddeford PTA, past president of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, a life member of the Friends of Maine Children’s Home for Little Wanderers, Adah Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Camp Waban and the Biddeford Historical Society. Previously she served as chairman of the cancer drive, Red Cross, heart fund, March of Dimes, worked for the Webber Hospital Building Fund, and was a member of the Webber Auxiliary, Amaranth, Biddeford Activities Association, Band Boosters, and the Spartoners of the Coast Guard Reserve. She was a past officer of the Maine State Employees Association and past member of the Altrusa Club. She was vice president in the York County Clerks Association and was active in the Maine City and Towns Clerks Association as well as the New England Clerks Association. She was a member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was active in the Democratic party. She was a past officer and member of the Biddeford Democratic Women’s Club, York County Women’s Club, County Democratic Committee, the 10 Club, and a delegate to the state convention. She served as secretary to the Biddeford Democrat caucus and was elected to serve as secretary to the Biddeford delegation at the state convention. Pauline was listed in the 1976 Bicentennial Edition of Maine’s Most Prominent People. She was commended by the U.S. Air Force in assisting the recruiting service and conscientious service efforts toward the advancement of peace. She was an honorary member of the Kennebunk Dump Association. Pauline married H. Clifford Berry Nov. 8, 1940, and had two daughters. He died in 1972. In 1986, she married Manuel Lawrence who died in 1998. Pauline was also predeceased by a brother, William D. Beety Jr.; infant daughter, Melanie Jean Berry and her parents, Hazel and William D. Beety Sr. She is survived by a daughter, Darlene (Berry) Caverhill and husband, Philip, of Caribou; daughter, Deidre (Berry) Donovan and husband, Michael; two stepdaughters, Candace Lawrence and Leslie Roy, all of Biddeford; three grandchildren, Troy C. Caverhill, H. Cory Donovan and Meegan C. Lawrence; three stepgrandchildren, Shane McAlevey, Casey and Gary Roy; four great-grandchildren, a fifth due in March, and three great-stepgrandchildren. Visiting hours are to be held 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main St., Saco. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, at the funeral home. Burial will be held after the service at Woodlawn Cemetery, Biddeford. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to the American Lung Association, Maine Chapter, 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330-5615.
