EDDINGTON – Peter Godley, 84, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died Thursday, March 11, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. He was born March 8, 1920, in Pontefract, Yorkshire, England, one of eight children to John William and Marion Colquhoun (Burnett) Godley. In 1937 at age 17, Peter joined the British 8th Army in the Royal Corps of Signalmen serving the entirety of World War II. He was honored twice by mention of his name in C & C Despatches from the Queen of England for distinguished service to his country. After the war, at the age of 28, he immigrated to the U.S. where he settled in South Brewer. He found employment at AJ Tuckers and Sons, Brewer, and worked in the shoe industry until his retirement at age 62. Peter was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying both hunting and fishing as well as long walks. Peter had a wonderful way with words and was an engaging conversationalist with a wry sense of humor. He enjoyed classical music, history and, for a time, honed his talent for creative writing. He had a love for dogs, which were his constant companions in later years and most recently his golden retriever, Chumley. Surviving are his beloved wife, Margaret L. (Hatch) Godley of Eddington; a daughter, Rebecca Sue Godley of Woonsocket, R.I.; a son, Otis Alan “Joe” Godley of Eddington; a stepson, James Tolman and his wife, Donna, of Holden; a granddaughter, Riley L. Godley of Brewer; step-grandchildren, Mathew and Jessica Horowitz of Casco, Darcy (Tolman) Diliddo of North Attleboro and Brandon Tolman of Holden. He was predeceased by all his siblings and is survived by many nieces and nephews living in the United Kingdom; and two cousins, James and Henry Morrill of Brewer. Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 15, 2004, at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, 21 Holyoke St., Brewer. Burial at Meadowbrook Cemetery, Eddington will be in the spring.
