BANGOR – Phyllis A. Bates, R.N., beloved wife of the late Lawrence W. Bates, died Dec. 27, 2003, at a Winthrop Healthcare Center. She was born May 28, 1924, in Taunton, Mass., the daughter of Philip A. and Beatrice E. (Mallette) Reilly. Phyllis graduated from and trained at Boston City Hospital. She was a communicant of St. Teresa’s Church in Brewer for many years before moving to Bangor. Phyllis volunteered at Eastern Maine Medical Center in the gift shop for more than 20 years. Surviving are one son, Lawrence P. Bates and wife, Kerri, of Dedham; four daughters, Ellen Day and husband, James, of Hampton, N.H., Cheryl Wilkinson and husband, Leigh, of Winthrop, Catherine Haney and husband, Joel, of Bangor, and Phyllis Graffam and husband, Robert, of Vero Beach, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, Julie, Sean, Leigh, Amie, Richard, Casey, Timothy, Ryan, Jonathan, Matthew, Brian, Bobby and Christine; two great-grandchildren, Meghan and Jason. She will be remembered by a special friend, Marion Walsh. Relatives and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday at Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, South Main St., Brewer, with Rev. Joel R. Cyr, pastor, celebrant.
