BELFAST – Phyllis Elva Howes, 89, passed away Feb. 7, 2007, at Waldo County General Hospital. She was born Oct. 20, 1917, in Deadwater, the daughter of Peter and Esther (Bean) Dunn. For 27 years she and her husband, Clayton, owned and operated Howes General Store, Searsmont. She was a longtime member and past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, a founding member of the Waldo County Law Enforcement Association and had served as treasurer for the town of Searsmont. Before ill health, she enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens and quilt making. After their retirement, she and her husband enjoyed several car trips from Maine to California, usually accompanied by various good friends to share in the experience. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years in 1995. She is survived by her four children, Earl F. Howes and his wife, Barbara, of Jefferson, Marilyn Sawyer of Lincolnville, Roberta Whitcomb and her husband, Emery, of Monroe and Sandra Roberts and her husband, Norman, of Searsmont, as well as several grandchildren, great-grand-children, one great-great-grand-child, nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held in the spring at Green-wood Cemetery, Montville. Donations in her memory may be made to the Waldo County Law Enforcement Association, care of Sheriff Scott Story, 45 Congress St., Belfast, ME 04915. Arrangements are by Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
