TOWN HILL – Phyllis G. Joyce, 93, died June 8, 2008, in Town Hill. She was born Jan. 15, 1915, in Town Hill, the daughter of Herman Burnell and Susie Smalley (Thomas) Gilbert. She was a member of Town Hill Federated Church, president of Town Hill Ladies Aid Society and a member of Bar Harbor Bird Society. Phyllis met her late husband, James “Hank” Joyce in Bar Harbor at the Criterion Movie Theatre, where she was the ticket seller. They were married Aug. 27, 1941, then celebrated the birth of their only child, Susan, Jan. 2, 1943. Her greatest joy was being a grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed being the center of attention, selling tickets on quilts, raising money for the Ladies Aid Society and helping out the firehouse and the Town Hill church. Phyllis is survived by three grandchildren, Elizabeth and husband, Thomas Windholz, of Vienna, Austria, Christina Levesque of Town Hill and Eden Rzasa of Ipswich, Mass.; and four great-grandchildren, Chandler, Ethan and Zachery Levesque, all of Town Hill and Marcus James Sohn of Ipswich, Mass. She will be greatly missed by David and Logan Witham and Marcus Sohn; and tea time with John Smolley. She was predeceased by her husband, James Henry Joyce; one daughter, Susan Rzasa; and two brothers, Burnell and Chandler Gilbert. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, June 13, at Town Hill Federated Church with the Rev. William Bigelow officiating. Interment will be at Town Hill Cemetery.
