PHYLLIS (HOLLISTER) STERLING SHAY EATON – Phyllis (Hollister) Sterling Shay, 82, went to be with her Lord April 18, 2004, at a Houlton healthcare facility. She was born June 11, 1921, in Manchester Memorial Hospital in Manchester, Conn., the daughter of Charles W. and Virginia (Loomis) Hollister. She was a graduate of Manchester, Conn., High School, Hartford Art School and the Rhode Island School of Design. Phyllis worked as a textile designer for two years for Cheney Bros., and as a TEC Illustrator for 25 years for Pratt & Whitney. She was married to Joe A. Sterling for 39 years, and they moved to Maine in August of 1977, where they operated Joe’s Tackle Shop in Weston for 10 years. After his death on Nov. 28, 1986, she married Daniel Shay, March 13, 1988, and they enjoyed 16 years of marriage together. Phyllis was an accomplished artist. Her paintings are displayed at the local Machias Savings Bank and were often lent to the art shows that are held in Danforth. She also made many fishermen happy because she was very skilled at fly tying and was also skilled at needlework. It seems her fingers were never still from crocheting and doing embroidery. She was truly loved by so many and will be missed.
