ORONO – Mrs. Phyllis M. Smith, 90, died Feb. 17,2005, at an Orono nursing home. She was born Aug. 5, 1914, in Vanceboro, the daughter of Percy and Dorothy (McLaughlin) Howland. Phyllis was a lifelong member of the Grace United Methodist Church and a graduate of Bangor High School, Class of 1931. She is survived by her husband Arthur of 58 years; two sons, Donald and his wife, Kathy Smith, of Stockton Springs, James and his wife, Diane Smith, of Kenduskeag; two brothers, Captain Bernard Irving Joy of San Diego, Calif., and Irving V. Joy Jr. of Orrington; one sister, Mrs. Verna Marie Howland Parks of Veazie; four grandchildren, Alison, Christopher, Andrew, and Benjamin. She was predeceased by three brothers, James D. Howland, the Rev. Leslie W. Howland and Alfred M. Joy; one grandson, Matthew A. Smith. Graveside services will be held in the spring in the family lot, Oak Grove Cemetery, Bangor. Arrangements by the Greenlawn Funeral Directors, Bangor.
