CARMEL – Phyllis R. Penney, 83, wife of the late Roland O. Penney Jr., went home to be with the Lord after complications from hip surgery, May 22, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Portland, the only daughter of M. Joseph and Ethel (Baker) Daley. Phyllis was a graduate of Brewer High School and attended Husson College where she was given the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. and work in the first secretarial pool at the brand new Pentagon. There she was able to greet diplomats and leaders from countries all over the world. Later, she returned to Maine and met the love of her life, Roland Penney. Her life then began as a Navy wife traveling all over the country with her family. After Roland’s retirement from the Navy she returned to Maine and enjoyed working for many years at Doug’s Shop and Save in the deli department. She was a member of Columbia Street Baptist Church for more than 50 years, where she sang in the choir and was part of the “Famous Trio.” In 1998, she moved to Carmel and made her home with her daughter, Brenda and son-in-law, Dick. Phyllis was a member of the Carmel Union Congregational Church for several years, the Harvest Grange, the Carmel Senior Citizens and the Carmel Christmas Club. She was strong in her Baptist faith and recently became a member of the Hermon Baptist Church. She is survived by twin daughters and their husbands, Brenda and Richard Arnold Jr. of Carmel, Linda and Earl Tracy Jr. of Brewer; one son and his wife, Bruce Penney and Holly of Brewer; five grandchildren, Karen Harris, Scott Arnold, Kevin Tracy, Monica Perkins, Brian Tracy and their spouses; and 11 great-grandchildren, Ashleigh, Tyler, Michael, Christopher, Lindsay, Jenna, Brianna, Jacob, Alyssa, Chase and Baby Perkins; three sisters-in-law, Gloria, Marion and Ruth. Phyllis will be sadly missed by her shelties, Sable and Haylee. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 25, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 26, at Hermon Baptist Church with the Rev. Garnett Chute, pastor officiating. Interment will be at Marston Cemetery, Orrington.
