LINCOLN – R. Eugene “Gene” Libby, 70, succumbed on Dec. 13, 2005, after a long journey through the maze of Alzheimer’s Disease. Gene was born July 1, 1935, in Bangor, the son of F. Rhoden Libby of Lincoln and the late Dorothy (Wescott) Libby. He graduated from Mattanawcook Academy in 1953 and later, from Thayer Hospital School of x-ray and laboratory technology. Gene spent most of his career as owner and operator of Workman Hospital and Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Lincoln. Other business ventures included A&R Garage, Country Square, Lakeside Campground, Spruce Valley Campground and Osgood’s Department Store. Gene was a past member of the Lincoln Town Council, Lincoln airport committee and Lincoln Rotary. He was past president of the Maine Healthcare Association, Maine Campground Owner’s Association, a northeast director of American Healthcare Association and a member of the National Administrators Board. He was a member of AOPA, a lifetime member of Sports Alliance of Maine and of Maine Healthcare Association, of which he was very proud. Gene was an avid pilot, sportsman and Corvette enthusiast. He also loved “fire talk” and “the camp on the hill.” He is survived by children, Darcie Ward and her husband, Al, of Kennett Square, Pa., Terry Libby and his wife, Jackie, of Lincoln, Jeanine Perry and her husband of Montana; their mother, Nancy Libby of Lincoln; children, Lisa Libby and Arthur Grant of Augusta, Leiah Priest and Rob Workman of Enfield and Jae R. Libby-Folster and her husband, Jeff, of Enfield; their mother, Cynthia Libby of Lowell; son-in-law, Scott Priest of Enfield; grandchildren, Sara, Margaret “Scotti”, and Emily Ward, Nathan and Erynn Libby, Jarrett Priest and Jaeden Folster; brothers, Roy Libby and his wife, Betty, of Plantsville, Conn. and Mike Libby and his wife, Barbara, of Lincoln; brother-in-law, David Pease of Enfield; several nieces and nephews and a special nephew, Tim Libby. He is also survived by special friends, Bill and Linda Houghton, David and Elaine Hicks, “Tooty” and Andrea Smith, Walter McLaughlin, Doug Ludden, Pat and Carol MacEachern and his right hand, Barbara Russell. He was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy; a daughter, Margaret; and in-laws, Searle and Leta Thompson. Friends may call 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at the Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Rd., Lincoln.
