NEW GLOUCESTER – Raymond C. Atwell, 62, passed away peacefully Jan. 5, 2006, at his home surrounded by his loving wife Donna; his cherished daughter, Wendi; and his adored sister, Mary, after a long illness. Mr. Atwell was born and raised in Baltimore, Md. and spent his adult life in Maine. Mr. Atwell served in the U.S. Army for eight years. He was a member of the 281st Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam. He was a member of the VFW Post 11553 and served as quarter master and post commander. After serving his country, he worked at Beechcraft Corporation at the Augusta Airport and worked at several Maine companies as an engineer. He was an avid outdoorsman and thoroughly enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Donna E. Atwell of New Goucester; two daughters, Wendi Rockett and her fiance, Daniel Brume, of Portland and Robin Goodwin and her husband, Steve, of Westbrook; one son, Jeffrey Brooks of Windham; four sisters, Mary Prince and her husband, Raine, of Quantico, Md., Jean Kernan and her husband, Bud, of Essex, Md., Pat Murray of Frankford, Del. and Dianna Evans and her husband, Tom, of Oceanview, Del.; several nieces and nephews and eight grandchildren, Alexander, Brad, Jasmine, Cameron, Kylah, Brooke, Benjamin and Cody. A VFW service will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, at Dolby Funeral Chapels, 434 River Rd., Windham. A celebration of life will follow at the VFW Post 6859, 687 Forest Ave., Portland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer-Maine Affiliate, P.O. Box 1626, Bangor, ME 04402. Ray’s family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Leonard Moses at the VA Hospital in Richmond, Va., Dr. George Boccia at the VA Togus Hospital in Augusta and Dr. Patricia Lerwick at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
