BREWER – Raymond W. Nickerson, passed away May 4, 2004, at a Bangor healthcare facility. He was born May 23, 1908, in Clifton, the son of Charles and Mildred Nickerson. He worked for the U.S. Post Office as a letter carrier, first in Bangor and then in Brewer, for 42 years. He built the home in which he and his family lived on North Main Street, and the Pine Cone Diner (now the Eagle’s Nest) directly across the street from it on the Penobscot River, which Mrs. Nickerson operated for 30 years. He was an active member of the Clifton Baptist Church in his youth, and later joined the Calvary Baptist Church in Brewer, where he taught Sunday school and served as a deacon for many years. After retirement, he and Mrs. Nickerson spent several months each year in Florida, where they made many friends and became active in church life there. Mr. Nickerson often sang as a soloist in church and at nursing homes as part of the church’s outreach ministry. An avid sportsman, Mr. Nickerson enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Big Buck Club. As a young man, he played softball as a pitcher for a post-office team that competed annually in a city league. He was the number-one fan of anyone in the family, children or grandchildren, who participated in school sports. He took up golf after retiring from the Post Office and continued playing until he was 90. He was a regular participant in the Bangor-Brewer Senior Games, where he won gold medals in several events. A born competitor, he left everyone in his family with vivid memories of board games with much determination and enthusiasm. He leaves his four children, Raymond S. Nickerson and his wife, Doris, of Bedford, Mass., Norris Nickerson and his wife, Linda, of Holden, Beverly and her husband, James Hay, of Racine, Wis., Ginny and her husband, Gary LaClaire, of Eddington; 11 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Velma; his sister, Madeline; and by one grandchild. He was much loved by his family and will be greatly missed but we take comfort in knowing that he is with his Lord in a much better place. The family extends their sincere gratitude to the entire staff at Stillwater Health Care for the loving care provided to Raymond over the past approximately three years. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer. Funeral services will be held 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Brewer Calvary Baptist Church, 61 State St., with the Rev. Roger Davis, Pastor, and Rev. Dick Woehr, officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer.
