BIDDEFORD – Raymond Wakefield, 87, of Biddeford, and Vero Beach, Fla., died March 29, 2005, at the Pine Point Center for Health Care and Rehabilitation in Scarborough. He was born Dec. 28, 1917, in Biddeford, to Ezra C. Wakefield and Lillian Bradbury Wakefield. Raymond graduated from Biddeford High School and earned several post-graduate certificates in technology. He served in the Merchant Marines in World War II and then worked as a first class machinist at the Portsmouth Navel Shipyard. He worked in his grandfather’s and father’s roofing business, Clark Wakefield and Son before starting R. C. Wakefield Heating and Air Conditioning, retiring in 1978. He served on the Boards of Trustees for Biddeford Savings and Pepperell Trust Company. He was a member of the Elks Club, the Rotary Club, the Dunlap Masonic Lodge of Biddeford and the Kora Shrine Temple of Lewiston. Raymond was the developer of Waco Acres in Biddeford. He was an avid hunter and fisherman at his camp on Molasses Pond in Eastbrook, and enjoyed golfing, gardening and real estate. Raymond is survived by his wife of 38 years, Lorraine S.; his daughters, Linda Wakefield LaRou and her husband, Joseph, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Susan B. Gray and her husband, Duane, of Blue Hill; stepchildren, William Plante and his wife, Suzanne, of Longmont, Colo., Bette Jewett and her husband, Ted, of Saco and Deborah Brown of Dewitt, N.Y.; grandchildren, Nicole L. Viscusi, Peter Wakefield LaRou, Annemarie L. Napolitano, Andrew, Melanie, and Adam Gray, Renee Thom, Tracy Flavin, Lisa Assenza, Jason Plante, Michelle Lavigne, Allan Jewett, Amy Thurlow, Dylan Brown, and Benjamin Murphy; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen Daly Wakefield in 1957 and their son, Mark C. Wakefield in 1991. Visiting hours are to be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Dennett, Craig and Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main St, Saco, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Mark C. Wakefield Scholarship Fund, care of Kennebunk High School, 89 Fletcher St., Kennebunk, ME 04043.
