BELFAST – Rebecca Crane Tompkins, 89, died July 21, 2004, in Belfast of congestive heart failure. She had recently transferred from her home on Islesboro, built by her grandmother in 1899. Born May 5, 1915, in New York City, Mrs. Tompkins was the only child of Rebecca Riggs Crane and Clinton H. Crane, the noted yacht designer. She attended Chapin School and Bennington College. She was an accomplished sailor and golfer, who in recent years lived in Cotton Bay, the Bahamas, and Islesboro. Mrs. Tompkins leaves two daughters, Lela Truslow of Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., and Susan Humphrey of Brooks; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial lunch will be given noon Friday, Aug. 6, at Longledges.
