BREWER and SACO – Rena E. Hughes, 74, passed away Friday, April 30, 2004, at a Biddeford healthcare facility. She was born Feb. 15, 1930, in Allagash, one of 17 children to William and Alice (Walker) Hughes. Rena lived in Anchorage, Alaska, where she worked for Alaska Cleaners for more than 20 years, working her way from press attendant to branch manager, overseeing several branches. Following her career at the cleaners, Rena pursued her real estate license. She moved to Redding, Calif., where she volunteered as a senior companion, receiving much recognition and numerous awards. Rena continued her volunteering efforts after moving to Brewer eight years ago with her son to be closer to her extended family. She recently moved to Saco to live with her son due to declining health. Rena was a very proud and devout Catholic, never fearing death as she knew she would be with her Lord. She is survived by her beloved son, William Hughes of Saco; two sisters, Winnifred Russell of Naugatuck, Conn., and Sheryl Griffin of Anchorage, Alaska; one brother, Lyman Hughes of Dundein, Fla.; and numerous special nieces and nephews. Rena was predeceased by many brothers and sisters, including her identical twin, Freida (Hughes) Clark. Rena’s son wishes to thank the dedicated staff at Renaissance Healthcare Center in Biddeford for the excellent care she was provided. In accordance with the wishes of the deceased, there will be no services.
