WEST SEBOIS – Leighton E. “Buddy” Shields Sr., 79, passed away peacefully at a local hospital Monday, May 3, 2004. He was born Sept. 1, 1924, in Houlton, the son of Charles and Ruby (White) Shields. He attended school in Oakfield, and later entered the U.S. Army, where he served from 1946 to 1947. Buddy worked for Bangor and Aroostook Railroad for 35 years retiring in 1985. He enjoyed his home and garden in West Sebois, as well as hunting and fishing. Buddy loved nature, especially feeding and watching the birds in his back yard. Other favorite pastimes of his were baseball and watching golf on TV. He also had a special appreciation for music and followed his sons’ band over the years. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bette (O’Hara) Shields; three sons, Jerry Shields of Brownville, Gene and wife, Karen Shields, of West Sebois, David Shields of Fairfield; two grandchildren, Amy and Kristopher; a sister, Cora Clark; and a brother, Paul Shields, both of Oakfield. He will also be missed by many special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Dorothy Gaudett and Norma Peg Crandall; and brothers, Charlie, Floyd and Earl. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, at R. L. Bouchard Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket. Funeral services will held at the funeral home 11 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 2004, with the Rev. Peter Main officiating. Burial will be in Millinocket Cemetery.
