JONESPORT – Evelyn Marie Merritt Alley, 56, died Friday, April 30, 2004, at the Sunrise Care Facility in Jonesport, surrounded by members of her loving family. Born on Oct. 29, 1947, in Jonesport, the second daughter of Shirley G. and Lorna (Urquhart) Merritt, she fought a long battle with cancer related illnesses twice throughout her adult life. She showed courage and strength and was able to stay in her own home until a week before her death. Evelyn attended Jonesport High School and graduated in 1969. She loved music and was an active member of the chorus. In addition, she also sang with a group of friends known as “The Jonesport Folk Singers.” She and her brother were king and queen of the Spring Fling in 1966. She worked at several places including Carver’s Shellfish in Beals and at Stinson’s in Prospect Harbor. Evie took pride in a job well done. She was a great lover of animals and will be missed by her cat, Mindy. Friends and family alike regarded Evelyn as a person with a kind heart. In the words of one friend, “she was a quiet gentle soul…she lived a simple life. Her legacy to us is her love.” Her mother regarded her as a loving daughter. Evelyn was predeceased by her dad and her brother, Shirley Jr. Surviving are her mother; her sisters, Julia MacLean and her husband, Vincent, Arlene Smith and her husband, Dwight, Cathy Merritt, Florence Leighton and her fianc‚, Denny Farnsworth; her brothers, Alberton and his wife, Carla, and Sheldon Merritt; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Merritt, all of Jonesport; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends, including Helen Varney Burst and Margaret-Ann Corbett of New Haven, Conn., Sharon MacAuley of Addison, Theresa Plummer of Bangor, and Shirley Shappy of Winterport. At Evelyn’s request, there will be neither calling hours or services. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in the family plot.
