PRESQUE ISLE – Retired Lt. Col. Herbert P. Bailey Jr., 86, died Sept. 29, 2006, at a Van Buren nursing home, after a brief illness. He was born June 13, 1920, in Manchester, N.H., the son of Herbert P. Bailey Sr. and Agnes (McMath) Bailey. He and his family relocated to Woonsocket, R.I., while he was a young boy. He was a graduate of Norwich Academy, Vermont, prior to entering the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the Air Force in 1968 after 25 years service and settled in Warwick, R.I. He and his wife relocated to Presque Isle in 2004 to be closer to family. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Presque Isle and the Retired Officers Club, Newport, R.I. Mr. Bailey is survived by his wife of 36 years, Elmire (Bouchard) Bailey of Presque Isle; a stepdaughter, Barbara A. Pelletier and her husband, Dan, of Van Buren; a granddaughter, Cheryl D. Hews of Presque Isle; and a great-granddaughter, Sarah Beaulieu of Presque Isle. He was predeceased by his sister, Virginia V. Bailey in 1994. Relatives and friends may call 9 a.m. Tuesday until time of service at the Ouellette-Thibault Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert A. Smith, celebrant. Committal service and interment will be at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Caribou.
