LIBERTY, Mo. – Earl R. Tweedie, 85, died Feb. 26, 2007, at the Veterans’ Home, Cameron, Mo. Mr. Tweedie was born Jan. 16, 1922, in Thorndike, Mass., the son of Oscar and Florence Hoggan Tweedie. He was reared in the Thorndike area and graduated from Maine Central Institution. On Jan. 8, 1943, he married Colleen King, in Guilford. Mr. Tweedie served in the military for 24 years, the first six years as a Navy pilot, flying the Hell Cat fighter, during World War II. After his discharge from the Navy, he enlisted in the Air Force, where he spent an additional 18 years, beginning as a air traffic controller and later as an Air Force communication commander. He retired from the Air Force with the rank of major in 1966. For the next 10 years, Mr. Tweedie worked for the state of Maine as a field advisor. He and his wife retired to Englewood, Fla., in 1977, where he enjoyed active participation in the Elk’s Club and golfing. During the latter part of their retirement, they spent summers in Maine and winters in Florida. In 1999, they moved to Liberty, Mo., to be closer to their daughters. Mr. Tweedie was a member of the Military Officers Retirement Association and the Thorndike United Congregational Church. He was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, June Marie Kelley. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Colleen Tweedie of the home; three daughters, Lee Curnow and her husband, Dick, Sonja Bradeen and her husband, Roy, and Marcia Reid and her husband, Ron, all of Liberty, Mo.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Thursday, March 1, at Fry-Bross and Spidle Chapel, Kearney, Mo.
