ISLAND FALLS – Joy (Skinner) Newman, 79, passed peacefully Feb. 25, 2007, in Houlton. She was born Dec. 20, 1927, in Hanover, N.H., the daughter of Oakley Smith and Gladys (Dudman) Skinner. Joy graduated from Windsor High School in 1945 and moved to New York City to attend Parsons School of Design. She then met Cal while helping in her father’s pharmacy in Windsor, Vt. They were married March 6, 1948, and moved shortly thereafter to Island Falls. Joy was an active member of her community; a deaconess and superintendent of Sunday school at Whittier Congregation Church, a 4-H club leader, district commissioner of the Meduxnekeag Pony Club, and an active member of the Pine Needle Club. Joy was instrumental in the development and operation of May Mountain Ski Area. She loved golf especially ladies day at VA JO WA. Joy and Doc shared many happy memories traveling with their Shrine friends. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Calvin “Doc;” her daughters and their families, Candace and Theodore Rupley, Sandra Newman, Darcy Newman, Heather and George MacKinnon; seven grandchildren, Mea Rupley Newman and her husband, Dave, Kara, Chelsey, Gretchen and Nicholas Newman, Paige and Colin MacKinnon; and a precious great-granddaughter, Hannah Rae Williams. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Whittier Congregational Church, Island Falls, with Mike Kasevitch officiating. Spring interment will be at Island Falls Cemetery.
