BANGOR – Retired Sgt. 1st Class William B. Pelkey, 64, died unexpectedly Dec. 2, 2006, at his residence. He was born Sept. 18, 1942, in Houlton, the son of Maxie and Leah (Jandreau) Pelkey. Bill was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the 25th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War, and was a career Sgt. 1st Class recruiter. During his career he received several medals including, a Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Meritorious Service Medals. He was a graduate of Brownville Junction High School, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Elks Club BPOE No. 244, Bangor; Gauvin-Fowler-Tupper-Stairs VFW Post No. 3381, Old Town; and a founding member of the Purple Heart, Joshua Chamberlain Chapter No. 1865, Bangor. He is survived by two daughters, Michele Pelkey of Ellsworth and Denise Young and her husband, Rob, of Brewer; three grandchildren, Kathryn, Lauren and Isaac, all of Brewer; one brother, Derald Pelkey and his wife, Mary, of Lyman, several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Delcey and Keith Pelkey. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, with the Rev. Roland Nadeau, chaplain of St. Joseph’s Hospital, officiating. Interment will be at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
