REV. GLADYS D. YORK NORTH YARMOUTH – The Rev. Gladys Doughty York, 94, died peacefully Sept. 13, 2005, having lived a full life of service to churches and people touching countless lives in Maine. She was born May 30, 1911, the daughter of Wilbert H. Doughty and Nellie Mae Alexander. Graduating from high school in Fall River, she went on to earn a bachelor of arts degree from Tufts College in 1932, and a bachelors from Andover Newton Theological School in 1935 – the only woman in the graduating class. Over the years, she has been honored for her many accomplishments. In June of 1985, she was given a surprise celebration for her Golden Jubilee. In 1985, she was installed as Pastor Emeritus in the North Yarmouth Congregational Church, and was the first recipient of the Distinguished Minister Award from Andover Newton Theological School; in 2000, she was recognized as one of the “pioneers” in Women’s Ministry in a celebration in St. Luke, and was to have been awarded a plaque next week for 70 years of active ministry in the U.C.C. in Maine. She enjoyed a birthday celebration at the North Yarmouth Church this past June, and had looked forward to December of this year when she would have been installed as Pastor Emeritus of the East Windham Community Church. The Rev. York is survived by her daughter, Ruth, of New Gloucester; two grandsons, Gregory Nadeau of Manchester, N.H. and Christopher Nadeau of Goffstown, N.H.; and her brother, Wilbert Doughty of Florida. A celebration of her life will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005, at the First Congregational Church in North Yarmouth with the Reverends Gil Healy, Susan Tierney, and Marilyn Glavin officiating. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will be private at a later time. Arrangements are under the care of Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, ME 04096. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to North Yarmouth Congregational Church, 3 Gray Road, North Yarmouth, ME 04097 or East Windham Community Church, Falmouth Road, Windham, ME 04062.
