HAMPDEN and LAMOINE -The Rev. Harland Swan Evans, 99, passed away, Dec. 5, 2003, peacefully surrounded by his family, at the Maine Veterans Home. He was born in Salem, Mass., Dec. 3, 1904, the son of Charles H. and Martha (Swan) Evans. Harland grew up in Massachusetts and was a graduate of Tufts University, Class of 1928 and the Boston University School of Theology, Class of 1931. Pete was also a graduate of the Officers Training School of the Massachusetts National Guard in 1938. During his career Pete served as the minister for the Upton, the Bedford and the Concord, Massachusetts Methodist churches. While in the Concord area, he also worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Concord and Framingham, Mass., for 10 years. He later moved to Lamoine, where he had served as the minister of the Ellsworth Unitarian Church from 1936-1942. In 1982, he moved to Hampden, where he made his home with his daughter and her family. Living in Hampden he enjoyed and was an avid supporter of Hampden Academy sports. Pete is survived by a son, Richard W. Evans and his wife, Kerry, of Concord, Mass.; his daughter, Alice “Tilly” Atkins and her husband, Dr. Henry Atkins II, of Hampden; a daughter-in-law, Ann Evans of Dover, Mass.; and eight grandchildren, Abigail, K. Meredith, Bethany and Todd Atkins, Hillary and Peter Evans and Jennifer (Evans) Walker and Glenn Evans; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Elinor (Way) Evans in 1982; by a son, David P. Evans, in 1979; and by his second wife, Helen Pease in 1987. He will be lovingly remembered by his family for always saying that all he wanted to do was; “Live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man,” and for his advice to “Let it Be.” A celebration of Harland’s life will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with the Rev. Dr. Rex Garrett, Director of Chaplaincy Services at Eastern Maine Medical Center officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford, Mass.
