MAPLETON – Richard E. Turner, 79, passed away July 6, 2008, at a Presque Isle hospital. He was born Jan. 7, 1929, in Presque Isle, the fifth son of David N. and Beulah (Johnson) Turner. He served in U.S. Navy on the USS Gearing from 1952 to 1955. He returned home to the family farm. Richard started a painting and wallpapering business in 1971, and continued this until he retired. He enjoyed traveling all his life, and in the later years took many trips to visit his children and extended family. An avid outdoorsman all his life, he was happiest spending time with friends and family in the outdoors. He served as Scoutmaster of the Mapleton Boy Scout Troop from 1977 to 1982. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Presque Isle and a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Richard and his wife Norma (Levesque), originally from Caribou, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, June 28, 2008. He has touched many people’s lives and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Norma of Mapleton; his children and their spouses, Karl and Judy (Spaniol) Turner, and their children, Isabelle and Hayden, of Portland, Ore., Sybil and Mark Pressprich and their children, Peter “Otto” and Emily, of Oregon, Wis., and Myles and Jacqueline (Jones) Turner and their children, Julian and Vincent, of Orondo, Wash.; three brothers, Philip of Caribou, Sidney of Rutland, Vt., and Vinal of Castle Hill; and a sister, Hope Noe of Concord, Mass. He was predeceased by a brother, Osmand Turner. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Presque Isle with the Very Rev. Jean LaBrie officiating. Relatives and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque, Isle. Interment will be at Southside Cemetery, Mapleton.
