SOUTH GOULDSBORO Richard Earl Bennett passed away Thursday, May 24, 2007. He was born Nov. 14, 1937, in Columbia Falls. He grew up in South Gouldsboro. He was the first student in South Gouldsboro to attend college and the first person from South Gouldsboro to be an intern on Capitol Hill working for Senator Payne. He served four years in the U.S. Navy. He moved to Amherst, N.H., in 1968 and spent 29 years working in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. In 1998, he retired and moved back to South Gouldsboro. In 1999, he became a snowbird and spent his winters in Palm Harbor, Fla. He was an avid reader, particularly in the subjects of science and history, traveled the world, volunteered at Schoodic Point, Acadia National Park for several years and volunteered for the literacy program at Palm Harbor Library, Florida. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Barbara; his daughter, Ellen Perka and her husband, Mark; his daughter, Joan Goodreau, all of Potomac Falls, Va.; his son, Donald Bennett, of Ashburn, Va.; and three grandchildren, Kyle Perka, Abigail Perka and Alyssa Goodreau, all of Potomac Falls, Va.; two nieces, Vicki Timmons of Winter Harbor and Barbara Bragdon of Brewer; and one nephew, Larry Torrey, Portland. Services and burial will be held privately. Donations may be made in memory of Richard E. Bennett to the Dorcas Library, 28 Main St., P.O. Box 167, Prospect Harbor, ME 04669-0167.
