INDIAN ISLAND – Richard H. Hamilton, 78, passed away Jan. 1, 2007, at at a Bangor hospital. He was born May 6, 1928, on Indian Island, the son of Harry and Mary (Hanley) Hamilton. After graduating from high school, he entered the Army in 1950 and served in Germany during the Korean War. Richard worked in the Boston area for 15 years after his service in the military. When he and his family returned to Maine, Richard spent the rest of his career involved in education and career development with the Penobscot Nation. He was a past member of the Tribal Council and he served as tribal chief for two terms. Richard was a past chairman of the Penobscot Tribal Housing Authority. He was most proud of his time as camp director of the Young Adult Conservation Corps. Richard enjoyed fishing. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and his dog, Lily. He was predeceased by his parents; and four brothers Paul, Harry, Peter and Robert Hamilton. Richard is survived by his children, Diane Hamilton, Richard S. Hamilton, Eric J. Hamilton, Harry J. Hamilton, Onawa Hoffman and Greta Neptune; dearly loved grandchildren, Aquene, Wiphun, Dylan, Karly, Sarah, Lucas, Sterling, Briana and Kyle; several nieces and nephews, including special niece, Edwina Simmons; and a large extended family. Friends may call 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Indian Island, until time of service Friday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Indian Island, with the Rev. Thomas Farley, celebrant and Deacon Fred Harrigan, homilist. Burial will be at the Tribal Cemetery.
