LEWISTON – Richard I. Walker, 82, of Peru, died Saturday night, July 3, 2004, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston. He was born Dec. 3, 1921, in Madrid, Maine, the son of Thomas Sutton and Rena Althea (Quimby) Walker. He graduated in 1939 from Dirigio High School. Mr. Walker was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942-46. He was stationed throughout the Pacific Theatre as a gunner/radar operator on the Vega Ventura Night Fighter. On March 2, 1946, he married Rachael E. Hall. They celebrated 35 years of marriage. Rachael died in October of 1981. For many years he was an independent truck driver. His favorite pastimes were working on his house and being with his family. He is survived by four sons, Richard Irving Walker Jr., of Glenburn, Clifford “Cuffy” Walker of Grand Lake Stream, Thomas Leonard Walker of Front Royal, Va., and James Andrew Walker of Peru; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Jacqueline Hughes of Brunswick and Evelyn Gurney of Rumford; numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Wiles Remembrance Center, 30 Weld St., Dixfield. Public graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Demerritt Cemetery, Peru, with the Rev. James Knox officiating.
