PORTAGE LAKE and PLANT CITY, Fla. – Richard “Dick” or “Pea Picker” Bishop, 86, husband of the late Mary (Gallupe) Bishop, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Caribou. He was born Nov. 18, 1921, in Presque Isle, the son of Archie and Alma (Desjardin) Bishop. Dick attended schools in Presque Isle and was active in sports, before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942, to serve as a medic sergeant, mostly in India. He was honorably discharged November 1945 and joined the partnership of Archie Bishop & Sons. While in this partnership, he did oil burner repair, fuel delivery and mechanical work. He married Mary L. Gallupe Valentine’s Day 1946. Dick enjoyed woodworking, dancing, water skiing and downhill skiing. He was a graduate of PIHS Adult Education. Next to his family, he loved his log cabin on Portage. He was an avid bird watcher; he had wild birds eating out of his hands and faithfully kept the feeders full. Dick and Mary spent their winters in Florida starting in 1986. They enjoyed square and round dancing, and playing golf. Dick was an active member and past president of Quoggy Joe Ski Club, Presque Isle Spudshufflers and Portage Hill Country Club. He is survived by a son, Richard “Dick” Jr. and his wife, Terri, of Plant City, Fla.; two daughters and their husbands, Peggy and Stephen Gudreau of Mapleton and Jayne and Paul Lundwall of Milford, N.H.; a sister, Patricia Armstrong of Mass.; four grandchildren, Chris and Doug Bishop, James and Alex Lundwall; two stepgrandchildren, John Meibaum and June Sumner; five great-step-grandchildren, Zecariah and Logan Meibaum, Noel Farley, Rebecca and Richard Peterson; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary; three brothers, John, James and Harvey; a nephew, Daniel Armstrong; and a stepgrandson, Keith Meibaum. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2008, at North Main Street Catholic Cemetery, Presque Isle. Those who wish may donate in his memory to Portage Lake Association, P.O.
