PRESQUE ISLE – Russell Wayne Smith, 84, of Mapleton, passed away Feb. 16, 2008, at Leisure Village Apartments, after a brief illness. Born Oct. 18, 1923, in Presque Isle, he was the son of Lionel E. and Delta F. Griffin Smith. He was educated in Mapleton schools, graduating from Mapleton High School. After attending the University of Maine, Orono, he helped his father run the family potato farm. On Jan. 23, 1946, he married Alicia W. “Chick” Long of Presque Isle, partnering to run the family farm and raise a family. After retiring from farming in 1975, Russell worked for the FHA, First Citizen’s Bank and finally on the scales at McCain’s, Easton, which he enjoyed very much, as it put him in constant touch with the potato growers with whom he identified so much. Russell was a member of Mapleton Lion’s Club, Washburn Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. He was on the Mapleton School Board and also on SAD 1 School Board for many years. He was a selectman in Mapleton and on the Board of Directors of TAMC. He was a member of Mapleton United Baptist Church. In 2006, Russell and Chick celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Later, in the summer of that year, they spent a week touring Nova Scotia. Russell was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his loving wife of 62 years, he is survived by his son, Dr. Terry W. Smith, O.D., and his wife, Paula, of Cumberland; his son, Timothy R. Smith and his wife, Donna, of Georgetown; and four grandchildren, Lisa Smith of New York, Kristin Smith of Washington, D.C., Adam Smith of Bath and Hannah Smith Tyson of Nashville, Tenn. The family would especially like to thank Dr. Stephen Wood and Dr. Amarnath Ramineni for their special care and concern. Also, special thanks to the staff at Leisure Village and Hospice of Aroostook for their special care in his final days. Arrangements are being made through Duncan-Graves Funeral Home for a memorial graveside service in the spring.
