LAHONDA, Calif. and HOULTON, Maine – Richard L. Gendell, 71, died Feb. 8, 2005, at his home in LaHonda, Calif., after a brief illness. He was born July 30, 1933, in Presque Isle, the son of Samuel W. and Esther (Porter) Grendell. He was a 1951 graduate of Houlton High School. After a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy, he studied art at Boston University. He worked in the field of Commercial Art until his health forced him to take an early retirement. He is survived by five children, Douglas Grendell of Colorado; Linda Grendell of Addison, Richard Grendell Jr., of Wisconsin, Dawn Ramsey and Marc Grendell of California; five grandchildren; two brothers, Dana S. Grendell of Alaska, Wayne L. Grendell of Houlton; two sisters, Phyllis G. Bruns of California and Ruth G. Holmes of Houlton. Also several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Janice G. Toothaker. Memorial services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
