BANGOR – Richard R. Thompson Sr., 83, of Hermon, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, at a Bangor hos-pital. Born Aug. 13, 1924, in Hermon, he was the son of Robert and Addie (Rose) Thompson. Richard married Hazel (McNerney) Thompson, Jan. 6, 1990. He was a truck driver for Coles Express for 33 years, retiring in the early 1980s. He loved spending time outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, growing a vegetable garden and traveling. He attended Hermon Baptist Church, Hermon. He was a life member of the Kenduskeag Masonic Lodge; Corinth American Legion; Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Brewer; and the Disabled American Veterans of Central Aroostook, No. 8. He received a Purple Heart during World War II. Richard is survived by his wife, Hazel; five children, Ellen M. Sanborn and her husband, Raymond, of Exeter, Richard Thompson Jr. and his wife, Arlene, of Hudson, Judy A. Dougal of Old Town, Carol S. Hodge and her husband, Rick, of Stetson, and Cheri Thomas and her husband, Michael, of Bangor; eight stepchildren, Sandra Earle and her companion, Jack, of Presque Isle, Susan McMann and her companion, Terry, of Mapleton, Nancy McClure of Hermon, Roberta Martin and her husband, Russell, of Corinth, Sharon Mabry and her husband, Jim, of Hermon, Rose McClure of Hermon, Roger McClure of Levant, and Tommy McClure and his wife, Pam, of Kenduskeag; one sister, Roberta J. Harding and her husband, Ervin, of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; three sisters-in-law, Melvina Thompson of Corinth, Beatrice Trask of Winterport, and Myrtle Herring of Parkman; one brother-in-law, Kenneth McNerney and his wife, Theresa, of Hudson; one son-in-law, Joe Hornyak and his wife, Betsy, of Corinth; 13 grandchildren, 14 stepgrandchildren, 29 great-grand-children, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy E. (Pinkham) Thompson; six siblings, Norman Thompson, Sumner Thompson, Raymond Thompson, Mary Bragg, Avis Bryant, and Donald Thompson; his parents, and three stepdaughters, Rosalie A. McClure, Judith L. McClure, and Lorraine J. McClure. Visiting hours will be held noon-2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at Hermon Baptist Church, 2496 Route 2, Hermon, where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. with the Rev. Garnett Chute officiating. Burial will be at Kenduskeag Cemetery, Kenduskeag. Arrangements in the care of Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town.
