DEXTER – Robert Staples, 82, passed away Aug. 30, 2007, at Togus Veterans’ Hospital. He was born June 12, 1925, in Corinna, a son of Cecil and Florence (Smart) Staples. He entered the Army in 1943 and served in the 7th Armored Division. He was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of Pouliot-Seavey Post American Legion and attended the First Free Baptist Church. Bob was a well-known businessman in the Dexter area. He and wife, Polly, organized and operated the Dexter Food Cupboard in earlier years. Bob and Polly enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Lords and Ladies Square Dance Club. They also enjoyed traveling and spending time with family at their camp on Lake Wassokeag. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Pauline (Adams) Staples of Dexter; two sons, Robert Staples II and wife, Shannon, of North Jay, and Terrance Stewart of Dexter; a daughter, Brenda and husband, Bruce Clarke, of Corinna; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at Crosby & Neal, 61 Main St., Dexter. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at First Free Baptist Church, Dexter, with the Revs. William Walters and Harold Wheeler officiating. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter.
