ORLAND – Richard Varnum, 57, passed away early May 17, 2006, with his family by his side after a long, courageous, and heroic battle with cancer. Richard was born May 1, 1949. He loved to hunt, fish and play golf, and especially to play practical jokes on people. Richard loved his family dearly. He was for many years associated with the Anah Temple Shrine go carts, was a hunter safety instructor, a member of the Masonic lodges of Maine, and he retired May 1, as an electrician for International Paper after “33.997” years. Richard was predeceased by his father, Richard D. Varnum; and a brother, Terry McIntyre. He is survived by his loving mother, Nonie (McIntyre) Varnum of Verona; his wife and true love of 36 years, Barbara Varnum of Orland, the daughter of Howard and the late Marjorie Soper; his son, Greg and his wife, Heather, of Orland; his daughter, Heidi Varnum and her fiance, Ronnie Wheaton Jr., of Stonington; his number two son, Mike and his wife, Maggie Hanscom, of Orland; brothers, Dennis and his wife, Susan, Tim and his wife, Lisa, and David and his wife, Kristen, all of Verona; his grandchildren; Kat, Aislynn, Alyssa, Lacie, Natasha; aunts and uncles, Jane and her husband, Carroll Lanpher, of Verona, Phila and her husband, Walter Witham, of Penobscot; a very dear family friend, Becky Knobloch; many nieces, nephews, and many special friends and family, including two dear physicians whom he considered friends, Dr. Philip Brooks M.D., and Bethany Jarvis F.N.P. Visitation for family and friends will be held 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 20 and 4-6 p.m. Sunday, May 21, with Masonic services at 5 p.m. Sunday at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 22, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating.
