SEARSPORT – Professor Richard W. Beglin, 73, died July 26, 2006, in New York City after a lengthy illness. A native of Elizabeth, N.J., he graduated from Hamilton College in New York in 1954 and received his masters degree from Cornell University in 1956. From 1956 to 1960, Mr. Beglin taught at Sweet Briar College in Lynchburg, Va., a tenure interrupted by two years service in the U.S. Army. In 1960 he joined the faculty of Pace University in New York City, where he remained until retiring in 1997. At Pace, he was recognized by both students and faculty members for his mastery in teaching 20th century American fiction, poetry and drama. He was instrumental in developing and coordinating Pace’s ESL, English as a second language, program. Working with a colleague in the history department, he also co-created the school’s first interdisciplinary approach to teaching. Upon retirement, he and his life partner, David N. Berg, moved to Searsport, where they joined an active and hospitable community. They also spent considerable time in Nassau, in the Bahamas. In addition to his life partner, Mr. Beglin is survived by his brother, retired New Jersey Superior Court Judge Edward W. Beglin Jr.; his sister-in-law, Rev. Helen M. Beglin, both of Westfield, N.J.; his nephew, Dr. Peter Beglin and wife, Elizabeth, of Bellingham, Wash.; his niece, Julie Beglin and husband, Daniel Horan, of Brooklyn, N.Y. and their three children.
