ROBERT ALLEN SIMMONS SR. PORTLAND – Robert Allen Simmons Sr., 71, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, surr-ounded by his family at Maine Medical Center after a long illness. Born Sept. 30, 1935, in Portland, he was the son of Arthur W. and Cecilia Booth Simmons. He attended Portland schools. On July 29, 1957, he married Jean Russo Simmons and just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He was co-owner of Simmco Corp. and Ricky’s Tavern with his wife for 29 years. Prior to that, he worked at Post Office Shoe Repair, Portland and Sebago Moc Shoe, Westbrook. He retired from the Army National Guard, Company A, after 23 years. Bob was a Farm and Little League coach in Portland, umpire for Little League Nine, Portland; Cub Master for Pack 66, Scout Master for Troop 41, Boy Scouts of America; member of the Barber Shop Quartet, Pee Wee football coach, drummer for “The Moonlighters” and supporter for local and school sports. He was a member of the Italian Heritage Center, Portland Elks Lodge No. 565 and Portland Eagles. An avid bowler, The Big 20 in Scarborough, he was a gun collector and coin collector. Bob will always be remembered for a lifetime of generosity to family, friends and community. He will be missed by Tank, his military Macaw. He is survived by his wife, Jean Russo Simmons; three sons, Robert A. Simmons and his wife, Rosemary, of Windham, Edward A. Simmons and his wife, Beth, of Buxton and Kevin B. Simmons of Portland and Caribou; three grandchildren, Jessica Simmons of Windham and Samantha and Emily Simmons, both of Buxton; three sisters, Irma Baker and her husband, Fred, of Falmouth, Janet McCubrey and her husband, Richard, of South Portland and Ella Conley of Old Orchard Beach; a brother, Arthur Simmons of Wyoming; a sister-in-law, Patricia Russo Lamb of Portland; several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 678 Washington Ave., Portland, with the Rev. Samuel G. Henderson III, celebrant. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The family would like to thank all the doctors and nursing staff at Maine Medical Center, Portland and Casco Bay Dialysis Center, Westbrook.
