SORRENTO – Robert “Bob” Lane Tukey Sr., 66, of Sorrento, died Sept. 4, 2004, at a Bangor hospital from complications following surgery. He was surrounded by his family. He was born at home Nov. 20, 1937, in Bristol (New Harbor), the only child of Augustine E. Tukey and Lena M. (Lane) Tukey. He graduated from Bristol Area High School in 1955, and attended Gorham State Teachers College, where he majored in education and obtained a BS in 1959. That same year he accepted a position as an Industrial Arts teacher at Sumner Memorial High School in Sullivan. He taught there for 36 years, retiring in 1997. After retiring from teaching, he continued his second career of carpentry and painting. In October 2001, he returned to Sumner Memorial High School as a part-time Title I tutor. “Mr. Tukey” loved working with young people and had an excellent rapport with his students. Bob loved to joke and tease and enjoyed music and sports. He especially enjoyed time with his wife and family, whom he dearly loved. Bob loved working with wood and many of his pieces are found in the homes of his family. Since 1978, he was an active member of the Steuben Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. His faith was a very important aspect of his life. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sarah Ann (Hallowell) Tukey, of Woodland (Aroostook); two daughters, Lynn Elizabeth Tukey of Bangor, and Barbara Lee and her husband, James R. Arseneau, of Belfast; one son, Robert Lane Tukey Jr. and his wife, Amanda B., of Burlington, Vermont; and three cherished grandchildren, Anna, Elizabeth, and Alexander Arseneau of Belfast. He was predeceased by his parents. Bob’s family would like to thank the physicians and staff of Eastern Maine Medical Center’s Cardiac Care Unit for their skilled and compassionate care through this difficult time. The family also wishes to express deep appreciation to all in the congregation and community for their support. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at the Steuben Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Route 1, Steuben. All are welcome to attend.
