CALAIS – Robert Douglas Abercrombie, 93, died Sept. 1, 2005, at a Calais nursing home. Bob was born Feb. 17, 1912, in Plainfield, N.J., son of the late Bolling and Anna (Schene) Abercrombie. He was a graduate of Brown University and furthered his education at Harvard University. Aug. 20, 1941, he married Barbara Murchie in Calais. Bob taught for over 29 years at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Pa., where he served as chairman of the history department. A dedicated and gifted teacher, he is fondly remembered by many of his students. He felt particularly honored to have taught American history to now noted author and historian David McCullough. Bob was an avid golfer and golf coach. He was involved with the New Brunswick Prince Edward Island Annual Pro Am Golf Tournament, where he won the Seniors’ Division several times. Bob was predeceased by his son, David Abercrombie in 1972; a grandson, David Abercrombie Jr. in 1994; and two sisters, Priscilla Schott and Virginia Hixon. Surviving are his loving wife of 64 years, Barbara; a daughter, Susan Abercrombie of Portland; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, Calais by Father David Sivret. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais.
