PRESQUE ISLE – Robert D. Andrews, 87, died Sept. 27, 2004, at a Pres-que Isle hospital. He was born March 2, 1917, in Rockford, Ill., the son of John T. and Genevieve (Ryan) Andrews. He was a graduate of Harlem High School in Loves Park, Ill., Class of 1935. He entered the armed services in August 1941, and was discharged in March 1946 with the rank of captain. He served two years at Presque Isle Air Base and then in Paris, France and Naples, Italy. While in Presque Isle, he married Doris Perry and upon separation from the service he returned there to make his home. Andrews was in the insurance field joining the Perry General Agency first, then the George W. Perry Co. and in later years the Hayden Perry Co. He was known to members of the Andrews family in Illinois as “Don”, as “Andy” or “Bob” to his many friends and family in Maine. He was kind and caring and always ready to lend help when it was needed. In his years in Presque Isle “Andy” was active in community affairs and in his church. He served as Secretary of the Northern Maine Fair for 43 years, served as president of the Presque Isle Rotary Club, and became a Paul Harris Fellow of that club. He was chairman of the Central Aroostook Red Cross, director of the Presque Isle Country Club, the Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce, the Independent Insurance Agents, Northeast District YMCA, the Presque Isle Water and Sewer Board, and governor of the Presque Isle Housing Authority. The Presque Isle Congregational Church was his church, and he served in many ways there. He was chairman of the Board of Deacons, the Board of Trustees, Stewardship Committee Chairman, chairman of the committee to renovate the sanctuary, and was always ready to help in many ways. He was deeply devoted to his wife and two daughters, but golf was his next love. He was a charter member of the Presque Isle Country Club, and when his health made it difficult for him to be active in the sport he turned to television to continue being interested in it. His love of flowers led to his pride in his garden where her spent many hours nurturing his plants. He could hardly wait for spring to come so he could get back digging in the earth. He is survived by his wife Doris; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Andrews; nieces, Sandra Perry of Presque Isle, Laurie Gray and Susan Ferland of Brewer. He was predeceased by two daughters, Mary Jo Andrews and Sara Andrews Boutin; and a brother, Jack E. Andrews of Pompano Beach, Fla. His special friends were: Susan Kimball, James Boutin, Marilynn Bonenfant, Carolynn Cameron and the late Jack Cameron and Ellis “Bud” Survant, and many other friends that were special to him. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at the Presque Isle Congregational Church with the Rev. Robert Grove-Markwood officiating.
