CLINTON – Robert John Rogers, 82, of Rogers Road, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at his home with his family and faithful companion, his dog, Skippy, at his side. Bob was born May 25, 1926, in Boston, the son of John and Esther (Sawyer) Rogers. He attended schools in Dedham, Mass., and Norfolk County Agricultural High School, Walpole, Mass. At the age of 17, he convinced his father to sign for him to join the Navy, serving in the European Theater, ending up in the Marines as a corpsman. After the war, he returned to Massachusetts to marry his wife of 52 years, the former Barbara Jones, and proceeded to earn a degree from the University of Massachusetts, Stockbridge School of Agriculture. In 1950, Bob and Barbara purchased the family farm on the Rogers Road, Clinton. “Smiling Bob” was a licensed auctioneer, attending school in Mason City, Iowa. He did auctions of all types around Central Maine. He retired from farming in 1981, selling the farm to his sons. After retirement, he and Barbara spent several years summering on Prince Edward Island and their winters in Zephyrhills, Fla. Bob was known far and wide for his quick wit, many jokes and nicknames. He left a lasting impression on anyone lucky enough to meet him. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife; and a very special sister-in-law, Doris Jones Miles. Bob is survived by his children, Edie Scott and husband, Sonny, Jack Rogers and wife, Linda, Judy Russell and husband, Pete, and Matt “Gump” Rogers and wife, Dot; grandchildren, Wendy Mahoney, Troy “Goose” Scott, Rhonda Hersom, Rob and Jake Rogers, Shawna Robinson, Josh “Bud,” Abel and Leon Russell, Luke, Kelly and Linsay Rogers; 15 great-grandchildren; his sister, Jean Harris and her husband, George; brother-in-law, Sumner “Bud” Jones and wife, Barbara; several very special nieces and nephews who all enjoyed time with Uncle Bob. He also leaves a special friend, Bessie Hillman. Grampa Bob will be remembered for his teasing as will any child or adult that came to visit or worked on the hay crews. The family thanks HealthReach Homecare and Hospice for the fine care extended and special thanks to Bertha. A graveside service and celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
