HAMPDEN and BANGOR Robert “Bob” E. McGary Sr. 73, husband of Elizabeth “Betty” (Harriman) McGary, died peacefully May 23, 2005, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 13, 1931, in Bangor, the son of Donald and Ruth (Carter) McGary. He attended Greenfields Private School Tuscon, Ariz., the University of Arizona, and graduated from Husson College, Bangor. Bob then joined the family business, F.H. McGary Optical Co. being the third generation to join the business. In 1997 he retired as President. He was a former member of the Bangor Jaycees, and the Triangle Club. Bob was a member of Rising Virtue Lodge No. 10, AF & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Bangor and Anah Shriners. Bob was also a member of Ducks Unlimited and a member of EMMC’s board of Corporators. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and since his retirement had enjoyed spending winters in Arizona. Surviving in addition to his wife, Betty, of 49 years; are their four children, Robert E. McGary Jr. of Bangor; Jill Gaudet and her husband, Greg, of Winterport; Susan Studer of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; Brent McGary of Bangor; three grandsons, Ryan and Troy Gaudet of Winterport; Richard “Richie” Studer of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Jane Harriman of Laurel, Md. Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Private interment for the family only will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
